Additional Information

Published in 1880 by E. P. and L. Restein of Philadelphia from artwork by W. R. Hallowell, this serene color print depicts an autumn scene along Wissahickon Creek, with a lone fisherman on the shore beneath trees ablaze with fall color. The artwork captures one of Philadelphia's beloved natural landmarks.

Wissahickon Creek winds through a dramatic forested gorge in northwestern Philadelphia. The valley became part of Fairmount Park in 1868, preserving its wooded hillsides as a cherished urban wilderness. Edgar Allan Poe praised the Wissahickon as one of the loveliest streams in America, establishing its romantic reputation among nineteenth-century visitors.

The Restein brothers operated one of Philadelphia's most respected publishing firms, producing high-quality color prints of American landscapes during the 1870s and 1880s. Their artwork combined careful observation of natural scenery with the rich hues of advanced color printing, bringing luminous depictions of treasured places into homes across the country.

This tranquil print stands as a testament to the Wissahickon Valley's enduring place in American landscape tradition, offering a window into the nineteenth-century appreciation of unspoiled nature near the heart of a great city. It appeals to collectors of Philadelphia heritage, autumn landscape artwork, and American decorative prints.
