Additional Information

Published in 1880 by Packard and Butler of Philadelphia, this detailed bird's-eye view presents New Brunswick, New Jersey, with the Raritan River flowing through the foreground. Vignettes of prominent buildings border the composition, including Rutgers College, founded in 1766 as one of the original colonial institutions.

Situated at the head of navigation on the Raritan, the town thrived as a commercial crossroads linking New York and the mid-Atlantic coast throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Stagecoach lines and later the Camden and Amboy Railroad carried travelers through its busy center on the main corridor between the two largest seaports.

By 1880, manufacturing had transformed the riverside settlement into a bustling center producing rubber goods, wallpaper, hosiery, and pharmaceutical products. The Johnson and Johnson company would incorporate there just six years later, beginning a corporate presence that shaped the community for generations.

This reproduction offers a window into a thriving river town at the height of its expansion and confidence. Considered among the finest panoramic views of central New Jersey from the era, it brings local pride and historical depth to any office, study, or living room.
