Additional Information
Established along the banks of the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls was settled to harness the power of the waterfall to operate gristmills to grind the grain cultivated widely in the region. Fort Dakota was established in what is now modern-day downtown Sioux Falls in 1865, and the city's population would grow slowly until the expansion of rail access in the 1880s caused a population boom. The city would be hot to more than ten thousand residents by 1890. Attracted by fertile farmland and ample space, many immigrants from Northern Europe and Scandinavia flocked to the region, establishing communities and neighborhoods along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
Bird's eye perspectives were produced as marketing materials and featured prominent civic features, notable residents, and local attractions. Because they were not produced for technical use, they bear more intricate artistic detail and embellishment. Local merchants and residents alike would display them in a show of civic pride, while they would be used throughout the country to attract industrialists and workers alike. These illustrations were among the most popular in the late nineteenth century and would remain so until the 1920s.
Sioux Falls had not been incorporated when this map was published, and its reputation as a remote outpost was well deserved. Though remote, it would serve as a critical waypoint for settlers traveling further West looking to replenish supplies. The unique aesthetic and immediately recognizable style make this an authentic piece of American cartographical history.
