Produced by one of the earliest pioneers of the birds-eye perspective, Lucien Burleigh, this stunning depiction of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, shows the city in a period of significant transformation and growth. By 1882 there were birds-eye perspectives being produced and sold in every market across America.
The region was first settled in 1730 on the banks of the Nashua River. By the nineteenth century, it had grown as the Fitchburg Railroad and Hoosac Tunnel created a link between Boston and Albany and spurred further population growth. Thanks to thriving mills powered by the river, its local economy was experiencing a good deal of prosperity by the 1880s. This attracted immigrants from across Western Europe and the United States who established communities and neighborhoods with enduring legacies. Burleigh’s signature style captures a distinct moment in the city’s rich history.
As a regional industrial hub, Fitchburg developed many iconic Victorian-style homes, which remain an enduring feature of the iconic New England town and line the cities history downtown.
