Additional Information

Produced by prolific cartographer and illustrator O.H. Bailey, this stunning depiction of Arlington, Massachusetts, immediately transports the viewer back in time. Bailey was extraordinarily prolific, and his career spanned five decades. His distinctive style bears characteristic flourishes, and he is among the most celebrated cartographers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Bailey’s 1884 illustration shows the town in a period of prosperity and growth. Some six miles northwest of Boston, Arlington was first settled in 1635 and was called West Cambridge until 1867 to honor Union Troops buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Since its first settlement, the Mill Brook creek flows through Arlington and has been a central economic driver.

Arlington served as an important location during the American Revolution and was the site of a bloody conflict between the Colonial Minutemen and British forces who were retreating from the battle of Lexington and Concord. Bailey was based out of Boston and focused his work largely on Massachusetts and areas immediately around the iconic American city. The city bears a rich history that is intertwined with American history itself and features numerous historically recognized buildings. The Old Schwamb Mill in the western portion of the city was created in 1650 and is the oldest surviving mill in America.

This is an essential piece of American cartographical history with a unique aesthetic and distinguishing character. By the latter portions of the nineteenth century, Arlington was a bustling suburb of Boston and remained an enduring link to the earliest days of America.
