Additional Information
George E. Norris's 1884 bird's-eye view looks down on Bristol, New Hampshire, a mill town at the outlet of Newfound Lake. Streets and rooftops spread below the viewer, the Newfound River threading through the center toward its meeting with the larger Pemigewasset just downstream.
Norris made his living drawing towns from an unseen height, and here he charted every street, spire, and factory with patient exactness. Bristol had grown into a manufacturing center, its mills turning out paper, lumber, crutches, and carriages along the rushing river.
The railroad had reached Bristol in the 1840s and linked it to distant markets, hauling goods out and summer visitors in. Beyond the packed square, the map opens out to farms, timbered ridges, and Mount Cardigan standing over it all.
Today this bird's-eye view stands as a testament to the panoramic map craze that swept small-town America and offers a window into Bristol as its mills and railroad were remaking it. Its hand-tinted rooftops and winding streets make it a prized print for a study, office, or den.
