Produced and published by Henry Wellge, this classic depiction of Butte City shows the city in a period of growth only three decades following its formal establishment. Prospectors and miners had flocked to the region during the 1860s after reserves of gold and silver were found in the nearby hills. Wellge was one of the most prolific American mapmakers and was among six cartographers responsible for creating more than half of the birds eye perspectives illustrated in the United States. This style was widely popular during the middle of the nineteenth century until technological advances in aviation in the early twentieth century allowed for aerial photography.
The city’s geographical location in the Silver Bow Creek Valley, a natural feature that straddles the Continental Divide. Copper mining became the primary economic driver in the late nineteenth century as demand increased across the nation as new technologies and the expansion of electric grids called for tremendous amounts of the metal. Butte City would go on to become the largest producer of Copper by 1910. The vast influx of miners went on to define Butte City’s distinct culture as one of the most iconic towns of the American West. Numerous breweries were established and operated by German immigrants and would remain a notable feature of the city throughout its history.
Wellge’s maps bear a distinguished character and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is a remarkable piece of cartographical history.
