Additional Information

Published in 1884 by the New York and Texas Land Company, Limited, of Palestine, Texas, this colored map presents Kinney County on the Rio Grande frontier. It records the county as it stood one year before a portion of its territory was detached to form neighboring Val Verde County.

The company was organized in 1879 to manage more than three million acres that Texas had granted to a major railroad as a construction incentive. Maps of this kind were essential tools for land agents promoting holdings to settlers, ranchers, and investors drawn by the expanding railroads.

Created from Bexar County in 1850, Kinney County honors Henry Lawrence Kinney, the adventurer who founded Corpus Christi. An army post established on Las Moras Creek in 1852 anchored settlement, and by 1884 the county seat of Brackettville supported churches, schools, a bank, and a weekly newspaper.

Today this map stands as a testament to the ambitions that shaped the Texas borderlands. It offers a window into the county before its boundaries were redrawn, and such regional maps are prized by collectors of Texas history. It makes a distinguished addition to any study.
