Additional Information
Issued by Currier and Ives in 1885, this dynamic portrait depicts the British racing cutter Genesta under full sail, flying the ensign of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron. The sleek vessel represented Great Britain in that year's challenge for the coveted America's Cup trophy.
Built in 1884 at the Henderson shipyard on Scotland's River Clyde and designed by naval architect John Beavor-Webb, Genesta measured roughly ninety feet in length. Owned by Sir Richard Sutton, the yacht crossed the Atlantic to New York Harbor, where she faced American defender Puritan during September 1885.
Puritan, created by Boston designer Edward Burgess, captured the best-of-three series two races to none. Genesta nevertheless earned lasting admiration after Sutton famously declined a forfeit victory when his rival fouled at the starting line, insisting instead upon settling the contest through honest sailing.
This reproduction offers a window into an age when transatlantic yacht racing captivated audiences across two continents and gentlemanly conduct defined competitive sport. Recognized as one of the finest maritime prints of the Gilded Age, it brings classic elegance to any nautical-themed interior, study, or seaside retreat.
