Additional Information
Produced and published by prolific American lithographer and illustrator Henry Wellge this birds-eye perspective of one of the most iconic cities of the American South bears a distinct style. Wellge is among one of five men to have produced more than half of all panoramic or birds-eye perspectives that are kept in the permanent archives of the Library of Congress. His unique aesthetic is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Birdseye perspectives were among the most popular illustration from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s, when aerial photography became a viable option. These pieces of work are authentic cartographical history and provide a distinct window to the nation’s development.
Chattanooga lies at the transition of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau, and the city center is surrounded by scenic hills and mountains. Chattanooga became one of the central railroad hubs in the South, servicing Southeastern Tennessee, Northwestern Georgia, and Northeastern Alabama; this allowed for a thriving import and export economy.
By the latter portion of the nineteenth century, Chattanooga had recovered from damages incurred during the Civil War. It was becoming one of the most prosperous regions in the American South. Chattanooga had been a central focus point of Union Forces as it facilitated the spread of munitions and supplies throughout the Confederacy. As manufacturing jobs became prominent in the region, immigrants established numerous neighborhoods and communities based along cultural lines.
