Construction of the Austin Dam on the Colorado River began in 1893, designed to lure manufacturers and businesses by promising affordable hydroelectric energy. The Dam would later be featured on the cover of Scientific American. Ultimately the Dam would collapse after heavy spring rains in 1900.
