Produced and published by prolific American cartographer Henry Wellge, this birds eye perspective shows Selma in a period of growth and transformation in the decades following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Wellge was among a small group of mapmakers responsible for creating more than half of all birds eye perspectives in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Panoramic maps were widely popular during this period and served to attract residents and merchants alike. They featured prominent civic buildings, religious and educational institutions, and economic opportunities to help expand development and increase population.
Selma was a prominent trade hub throughout the nineteenth century and also produced numerous armaments and iron ships for the South during the Civil War. Confederate forces were defeated in the city during the final month of the conflict in the Battle of Selma, where severely outnumbered Confederate forces began a retreat from the city following numerous skirmishes and clashes. Located on the banks of the Alabama River, Selma remains an enduring icon of the American South, and this birds eye perspective captures a moment in the city’s rich history. The unique aesthetic and classic style immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history as the nation approached the turn of the twentieth century and experienced a period of prosperity as manufacturing and the Industrial Revolution saw the foundation of numerous mills and factories across the Country.
