Additional Information

Published for the Railroad Commissioners office in 1881, this unique map of Alabama would have been vital to interstate trade during the late 19th century. The territory had been split from the Mississippi territory in 1817 and had a robust agricultural economy. The state had experienced a land rush after its inclusion in the United States in the same year as settlers and speculators alike were drawn to the region for its fertile lands and ideal soil conditions. Both industrial and subsistence farming was common throughout Alabama until the end of the 19th century when industrialization brought manufacturing jobs to the state.

The period following the conclusion of the Civil War saw Alabama making strides in establishing better public education systems, and building a more extensive railroad network. The Railroad’s allowed the state’s farmers to export their goods between towns and cities, and to ports in Mobile, the states only saltwater port.

By 1878 Mobile was exporting some nine million dollars in goods annually, and the city had become an icon of the American Gulf Coast. Considered a cultural center, Mobile is known for having one of the oldest Mardi Gras celebrations dating back to the founding of the city as the original capital of Louisiana in 1702. This depiction of Alabama shows the state in a time of significant transition as the nation’s economy shifted from primarily agrarian to more heavily reliant on manufacturing and production. This unique illustration transports the viewer back in time and is truly an authentic piece of cartographical history.

Our ready-to-hang canvas wall art prints are made in the USA using the highest quality materials with professional craftsmanship. This beautiful artwork is a perfect addition to your themed decor. Historic prints look great in the home, study or office. They also make an unforgettable gift.
