Produced and published by Henry Wellge, this birds-eye perspective shows Evansville in a period of significant transformation as the nation neared the turn of the century. Initially settled by French fur trappers, Evansville lies on the banks of the iconic Ohio River, which allowed the city to expand and grow throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The greatest population expansion occurred following the conclusion of the Civil War as residents flocked to the city as steamboat traffic spurred a thriving trade industry. With the completion of a railroad bridge across the Ohio River, Evansville became an essential economic hub for the region.
The city attracted immigrants from Germany, Scotland, Ireland, and business people from New England eager to establish manufacturing plants and mills powered by the river access. These communities were formed around cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Evansville is the third-largest city in Indiana and bears a distinct culture that reflects the numerous waves of immigration and settlement. Wellge was among six American cartographers who are responsible for creating more than half of all bird-eye perspectives in existence. His unique style is characterized by clean lines, artistic flourishes, and keen attention to detail.
Its central location and proximity to the Ohio River made it a popular hub throughout the latter portions of the nineteenth century. This map bears a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present in this authentic piece of cartographical history.
