Additional Information

As part of the so-called Quad Cities, Rock Island bears a unique culture and history shaped by its location on the banks of the Iconic Mississippi River. The regional plat of the city dates back to 1835 when the town was called Stephenson. It was renamed in 1841 and became a prosperous city with trade spurred by steamboats, railroads, and a bridge that spanned the Mississippi. This birds-eye perspective was produced and published by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the era, Henry Wellge.

Wellge is among six mapmakers responsible for more than half of all birds-eye perspectives published during the eighteenth century. These panoramic maps were widely popular during this time. They served as marketing materials to attract merchants, industrialists, and residents alike. Wellge's distinctive style and artistic flourishes distinguish his work from other pieces of the time and immediately transport the viewer back in time. The insets include prominent manufacturing, milling, and brewing companies designed to highlight economic opportunities for eager immigrants arriving in the eastern ports of New York and Boston. One of Wellge's signatures was the depiction of waterways bustling with freight implying significant trade and prosperity.

Rock Island's proximity to Chicago further spurred population and economic growth during the eighteenth century. It's home to the Rock Island Arsenal, which has manufactured ordnance and military equipment for the United States Army beginning in the 1880s. This authentic piece of American cartographical history captures a transformative moment in Rock Island's rich history.

Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
