Wilkes-Barre was incorporated in 1806 and grew rapidly during the nineteenth century as immigrants flocked to the city eager to work in the nearby coal mines or any number of the large manufacturing plants that spurred the local economy. Illustrated by noted nineteenth-century American artists and lithographer Albert E. Downs this stunning birds-eye perspective shows the city in a period of significant prosperity as the nation headed into the so-called Gilded Age. These depictions were among the most popular in the latter portion of the nineteenth century until the 1920s and featured prominent civic features as well as notable buildings and residents. They served as marketing materials to attract merchants and residents alike and were also displayed by locals as a show of civic pride.
Wilkes-Barre was one of America’s economic powerhouses from 1849 until the middle of the twentieth century. As immigrants settled in the city, many neighborhoods were established along cultural lines that exist to this day. Birdseye perspectives were able to capture the spirit of a city and its residents by including details that conventional maps could not. Without being to scale representations, the sense of space is heightened.
Down’s unique style and signature aesthetic are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. His works are included in the Library of Congress and are considered among the best representations of birds-eye perspectives from the late nineteenth century.
