Additional Information

Captured around 1890, this head and shoulders portrait presents Major John Wesley Powell facing right, serving at the time as Director of the United States Geological Survey. The photograph records one of America's most daring explorers and visionary scientists during the peak of his influential government career.

Born in Mount Morris, New York, in 1834, Powell lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 yet returned to active service. In 1869, he led the first recorded boat expedition through the Grand Canyon, a three-month journey of extraordinary peril down the Colorado River.

Powell directed the Geological Survey from 1881 to 1894 while simultaneously leading the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. His landmark 1878 report on arid lands urged water-based management policies that proved remarkably prophetic for the developing frontier.

This reproduction provides insight into the life of a soldier, scientist, and explorer whose contributions shaped how the nation understood its own landscape. Treasured among the most significant portraits of American scientific leadership, it brings distinguished presence to any office, study, or library.
