Additional Information
Founded in 1836 by the New England Emigrating Company, Beloit, Wisconsin, was in a period of significant growth as the turn of the twentieth century neared. Located at the confluence of the Rock River and Turtle Creek, thriving industrial manufacturing in the latter portions of the nineteenth century attracted numerous residents who established communities across cultural lines. Many of these exist to this day and give Beloit a distinct character and history. The region was initially settled by French fur trappers as early as 1820 and was an attractive area for settlers throughout the nineteenth century.
By 1890 Beloit had become an economic hub for southern Wisconsin, and numerous factories were established on the city’s waterways. Birds eye perspectives were widely popular from the middle part of the nineteenth century until the early parts of the twentieth century when technical advances in aviation allowed for aerial photography. They served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike by promoting economically enticing features, prominent civic buildings, and other notable institutions like churches, schools, and local businesses. Downtown Beloit has historically driven the city’s economy and features a historical district that preserves the unique culture and architecture found in the city.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that bears a distinctive aesthetic and immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The stunning detail depicts the town as it evolved in the late nineteenth century as a regional economic driver.
