Illustrated and published by prolific cartographer and artist T.M. Fowler, this stunning birds eye perspective of Scranton shows the town in a period of significant growth and transformation. Fowler’s work primarily focused on Pennsylvania, and he is considered the most prolific mapmaker of the region. His birds eye perspectives were wildly popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s. These unique illustrations were displayed in a show of civic pride and were also used as marketing material to attract industrialists and workers alike. Their distinctive style immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible link between past and present.
Scranton’s local economy was booming by the end of the nineteenth century. A thriving coal mining industry was bolstered by steel manufacturing, eventually becoming the second-largest manufacturer of steel by the turn of the century. The development of an extensive system of railroads in the region had allowed Scranton to flourish, and by 1900 the city had 100,000 residents and remains the sixth-largest city in Pennsylvania. A large Welsh and Irish influx established neighborhoods and communities throughout the city, many of which exist to this day and retain their distinct cultures.
Scranton established the first continually operated electric trolley system in the United States in 1886, which led to the town’s nickname of ‘The Electric City.’ Scranton enjoyed a period of great prosperity as the turn of the century approached, and this elaborately detailed birds eye perspective is an authentic piece of cartographical history.
