Located east of the Rocky Mountain range and on both banks of the Missouri River, Great Falls, Montana, remains an important cultural and financial hub in the central part of the state. Great Falls gained its name from a series of five waterfalls located north and east of the city that forced the Lewis & Clark expedition to portage their boats when they explored the area in the early portion of the nineteenth century. The power of these waterfalls was later utilized to provide hydroelectric power to the area and earned the city the nickname "The Electric City."
Great Falls was officially incorporated in 1888 and became one of the fastest-growing cities in Montana, eventually becoming the third most populous city in the state. Following the completion of numerous rail lines in the North after the conclusion of the American Civil War, access to these remote lands became more accessible, and residents flocked to the region for opportunities in ranching and other economic opportunities. Many of these immigrants came from the Northeast and Eastern and Western Europe and established neighborhoods and communities based on cultural traditions, many of which maintain a vibrant tie to their heritage and exist to this day.
Bird's eye perspectives were illustrated to entice residents and merchants alike and served as marketing materials that featured prominent civic buildings, economic opportunities, and natural attractions. Panoramic maps bear a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
