Additional Information
Dating to 1894, this is a map of monumental Lyon, France's second city, where the Rhône and Saône meet. The two rivers flow down to their confluence, the long Presqu'île set between them, while Fourvière and Croix-Rousse rise above on either side.
The year 1894 was a great time for Lyon, host to a grand Exposition at the Parc de la Tête d'Or. High on Fourvière stand the city's two newest sights, the Basilica of Notre-Dame and, beside it, the Tour Métallique, just raised for the world's fair.
On the Presqu'île lies the broad Place Bellecour, set between the rivers and their many bridges, while across the Saône stands Vieux Lyon, the old quarter, with the cathedral of Saint-Jean. Above it rises Fourvière, the old Roman hill of Lugdunum, and the Croix-Rousse climbs to the north.
This map stands as a testament to Lyon at its nineteenth-century best, offering a window into a confident city in its great Exposition year. One of the most glamorous of all old views of Lyon, it lends a prosperous, belle-époque flavour to any living room, office, or study.
