Additional Information
Spurred on by a thriving milling and textile industry, New Hampshire was experiencing a period of relative prosperity during the 1890s. The expansion of rail lines throughout the Northeast allowed for the rapid movement of goods. French Canadian immigrants were settling in the region and finding employment in the many manufacturing plants. These communities established neighborhoods along distinct cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. New Hampshire’s famous state motto of “Live Free or Die” has roots in the American Revolution and is indicative of the state’s independent spirit. Some of the first shots leading up to the revolution occurred in New Hampshire at the battle of Fort William and Mary, some five months before the historic battle of Lexington and Concord.
In the years following the American Civil War, New Hampshire enjoyed an economic surge along with the rest of the nation during the so-called Gilded Age of the 1890s. Railroad maps are unique representations that show the growth, transformation, travel, and settlement. The Northern Railroad was joined with the Boston and Maine system in 1890, which increased access and population expansion throughout the region. Home to the White Mountains and Mount Washington, both popular destinations for tourism since the latter portions of the nineteenth century.
Produced with a distinctive aesthetic, these depictions are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating a link between the past and present. This unique piece of cartographical history shows New Hampshire rushing towards the turn of the century.
