Created in 1897, this charming holiday poster depicts a gentleman seated on a settle bench, absorbed in reading a copy of Harper's Magazine beside a rack of clay smoking pipes. Edward Penfield designed the composition for Harper & Brothers during his celebrated tenure as the firm's art director, a position he held from 1893 to 1900.
Penfield drew inspiration from an eclectic range of sources, including Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and Steinlen in Paris, and the bold simplicity of England's Beggarstaff Brothers.
