Additional Information
Created in 1897, this charming holiday poster depicts a gentleman seated on a settle bench, absorbed in reading a copy of Harper's Magazine beside a rack of clay smoking pipes. Edward Penfield designed the composition for Harper & Brothers during his celebrated tenure as the firm's art director, a position he held from 1893 to 1900.
Penfield drew inspiration from an eclectic range of sources, including Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, the works of Toulouse-Lautrec and Steinlen in Paris, and the bold simplicity of England's Beggarstaff Brothers. His philosophy was direct and purposeful: "a poster should tell its story at once," he wrote in 1896, and "a design that needs study is not a poster."
By 1897, Penfield's poster series had helped ignite a nationwide collecting phenomenon, with exhibitions mounted in New York, Boston, and San Francisco. Harper's Christmas issues carried special significance, continuing a holiday tradition that dated back to the 1880s when publishers first commissioned illustrated covers for their most prestigious seasonal editions.
This reproduction captures the quiet sophistication that defined Penfield's mature style during the height of the American poster movement. Recognized by institutions from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Smithsonian, his Harper's designs remain treasured artifacts of an era when commercial art achieved the status of fine art.
