Additional Information
Born into an aristocratic Russian family, Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy became one of the most regarded realist fiction writers of the nineteenth century, and his most notable titles include War and Peace as well as Anna Karenina, both of which are considered essential pieces of literary history. Tolstoy was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906, and his works are studied to this day. His political views had an influential impact after he had a religious and spiritual awakening in the 1870s that caused him to become a fervent pacifist, which was also informed by his experience as a soldier in the Crimean War during the 1850s, which he chronicled in his work Sevastapol Sketches.
This photograph was taken as Tolstoy's work became increasingly political, and his writing during this time would go on to influence non-violent activists of the twentieth century, including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Tolstoy began writing in his twenties and came to acclaim for his early works within the Russian literary scene. However, he would garner international acclaim later in his life before becoming one of the most regarded authors in Western history.
This photograph bears a distinctive aesthetic that captures Tolstoy's spirit in his later years as his views on pacifism grew. Tolstoy and his wife Sonya had eight children, though most of his family fled Russia following the 1905 Russian Revolution and the subsequent rise of the Soviet Union in the October Revolution.
