The artwork depicts American warships in triumphant formation, celebrating a pivotal engagement that helped end four centuries of Spanish colonial rule in the Caribbean.
The Spanish-American War erupted in April 1898 after the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The decisive engagement at Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, saw the United States Navy destroy the Spanish Caribbean fleet, ending Spanish naval power in the region and paving the way for peace.
Currier and Ives produced patriotic prints throughout its decades of operation, commemorating wars, political figures, and events that captured the public imagination. By 1898 the firm was in the final years of its history, yet it continued to respond quickly to current events with timely prints distributed across the country.
This historic print stands as a testament to a transformative moment in American history, offering a window into the naval triumph that helped reshape the balance of power in the Caribbean. It appeals to collectors of American military history, Spanish-American War memorabilia, and the Currier and Ives catalogue.
