Ohio's extensive rail lines allowed the city to expand significantly during the nineteenth century and spurred population growth and economic prosperity. As construction of railroads increased access, many immigrants flocked to urban centers eager for work in the numerous manufacturing plants that had been constructed to meet increased demand for steel and other glass products during the Industrial Revolution. Due to its geographic proximity, Ohio was able to export industrial and agricultural products to major markets in the East and the larger international ports in Galveston and New Orleans to the South.
Ohio was admitted into the Union in 1803 as the seventeenth State and was the first post-colonial free State. Its central position made it a critical place during the American Civil War, and Ohio contributed more troops than any other State to the Union Army. Ohio also produced three of the Top Generals for the Union Forces; Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Philip Sheridan. Confederate forces attacked numerous towns on the Ohio River and was the furthest north that rebel troops advanced.
The discovery of coal in the 1850s further spurred the region's industrialization, and by 1853 Cleveland was the third-largest producer of steel and iron in the nation. This is an authentic piece of Railroad history that displays the importance of these routes for the development and expansion of this iconic State. The classic style and distinctive aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the past and present.
