Additional Information

Dating to 1898, this physical map charts the immense reach of the Russian Empire near the close of the Romanov era. It traces the mountains, rivers, and broad plains of a realm extending from Eastern Europe across Siberia to the rim of the Pacific, the largest contiguous empire on earth.

The map comes from an esteemed teaching atlas issued by the cartographic establishment of A. Ilyin, the foremost map house of imperial Russia. Rather than political boundaries, it emphasizes the land itself, using graduated tones to convey elevation, lowland basins, and the great river systems that shaped Russian life.

By 1898 the empire stretched across roughly a sixth of the planet's surface, bound together by an expanding rail network that pushed steadily eastward toward the Pacific. The map captures this boundless territory at its peak, a single sheet conveying the sheer scale of a state spanning two continents.

Born in the twilight of imperial Russia, this map stands as a testament to a vanished world soon swept away by revolution, offering a window into the geography of the Tsars. A rare survivor of nineteenth-century Russian mapmaking, it is a dramatic prize for any dedicated collector.
