Additional Information
Captured in 1901 by the Detroit Publishing Company, this photograph presents the racing yachts Constitution and Columbia under full sail during the America's Cup defender trials off the coast of New York. The two vessels cut through open water as they competed for the right to face British challenger Shamrock II.
Both yachts were designed by the celebrated naval architect Nathanael Greene Herreshoff at his boatyard in Bristol, Rhode Island. Columbia had already demonstrated her superiority by defeating the first Shamrock in 1899, and her proven speed made her the favorite heading into the 1901 selection races against her newer rival.
Columbia won the trials and went on to defend the Cup in three straight victories over Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock II that October. Lipton, the beloved Irish tea merchant, earned widespread admiration for his gracious sportsmanship despite repeated defeats, returning to challenge again in 1903 and twice more after that.
This reproduction recalls an era when towering canvas sails and polished wooden hulls defined the pinnacle of competitive sailing. Treasured among the finest yachting photographs of the Gilded Age, it brings maritime heritage and sporting elegance to any office, den, or coastal retreat.
