Additional Information
Colloquially known as the Trans-Mississippi throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the western two-thirds of the United States is vividly depicted in this 1902 map by American engineer and historian Hiram M. Chittenden. Known for his meticulous approach to historical accuracy, Chittenden documented the routes and regions frequented by fur trappers, some of the first Europeans to venture into the American West. His contributions extended beyond cartography; he would later form the Pacific Coast Association of Port Authorities and author significant works on Yellowstone National Park, Mississippi Steamboating, and fur trapping. These works reflected the American Progressive Era's focus on factual documentation over dramatic embellishment, a principle Chittenden upheld after his tenure with the Army Corps of Engineers.
This map showcases a distinctive aesthetic and unique style, transporting the viewer back in time and forging a connection between past and present. It captures the transformation of the American West, from the early days of colonization and fur trading routes (centered between St. Louis from 1807 to 1843) through the prosperity of the Industrial Revolution and into the modern era. The map also complements Chittenden's acclaimed publication, Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive, a cornerstone of his scholarly contributions.
The American West has a rich history and distinctive culture that has been documented thoroughly in both academic and cultural settings including some of the most iconic American films of the twentieth century that paid tribute to the era of Manifest Destiny.
