Additional Information
Produced and published by one of the most prolific American mapmakers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this birds-eye perspective bears a signature style. This illustration style was widely popular during the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bailey was among six American mapmakers responsible for creating more than half of all panoramic maps in the United States. Bailey was a pioneer of the method and produced numerous depictions of prominent East Coast cities over the course of his career, which spanned five decades. Bailey was based in Boston, though his work took him up and down the Eastern seaboard.
Hoboken was a bustling, dense city by 1904 and bears an enduring culture and ties to the larger East Coast cities like New York to the North, and its location on the Hudson waterfront made it an essential part of the Port of New York and New Jersey since its earliest days. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1855 and was home to the first recorded baseball game in 1846. In the early portions of the twentieth century, the city saw a large influx of Italian and Irish immigrants eager for work in the bustling docks.
The twentieth century would see significant advancements throughout the city and the establishment of numerous communities and neighborhoods based on cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. This authentic piece of American cartographical history immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond.
