Additional Information

Photographed circa 1905 in New Mexico by Edward S. Curtis, this striking image titled Acoma Water Girls captures five Acoma girls ascending a rocky hillside with pottery vessels balanced on their heads. The graceful procession reflects skills honed from childhood atop one of the Southwest's most ancient pueblos.

Acoma Pueblo, known as "Sky City," sits atop a three-hundred-sixty-seven-foot sandstone mesa in western New Mexico and ranks among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on the continent. Water had to be carried up steep mesa trails by hand, making the daily journey an act of endurance and communal devotion.

Curtis published this photograph as plate 573 in the sixteenth volume of The North American Indian, his twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. The Acoma were renowned for their distinctive thin-walled pottery, and the vessels carried here reflect generations of artistic mastery passed between mothers and daughters.

This remarkable photograph stands as a testament to the strength and perseverance of Acoma women, offering a window into daily rituals sustained for centuries atop their ancient mesa. It appeals to collectors of Southwestern Indigenous heritage, early twentieth-century documentary photography, and the unparalleled visual record of Edward Curtis.
