Photographed between 1870 and 1880 as part of the Brady-Handy collection, this striking portrait presents Robert Smalls, the celebrated Civil War hero and South Carolina Member of Congress. Born into slavery in Beaufort in 1839, Smalls rose to become one of the most extraordinary figures of nineteenth-century America.
In May 1862, Smalls commandeered the Confederate military transport CSS Planter from Charleston Harbor, navigating past armed fortifications to deliver the vessel and his family to freedom behind Union lines. The daring escape made him a national hero and earned him command of the Planter under the Union flag.
After the war, Smalls returned to Beaufort and entered public life, serving in the South Carolina legislature before winning election to the United States House of Representatives. He served five terms in Congress, championing public education and fighting against the disenfranchisement of Black citizens during Reconstruction.
