Produced by noted Boston cartographers and publishers Sampson, Murdock & Co., this classic representation of the Boston metropolitan area shows the iconic city in a period of significant growth and transformation. The early portion of the twentieth century saw technological advancements, and the nation was experiencing great prosperity following the industrial revolution and the so-called Gilded Age of the late nineteenth century. The official boundaries of the city had expanded during the 1870s as six hundred acres of brackish water were filled with gravel and developed. Many of the city’s most iconic buildings were constructed in the early portions of the twentieth century, including Fenway Park, the Boston Garden, and Logan International Airport.
Boston’s population has grown steadily since it was first settled in the seventeenth century and by 1907 was home to more than half a million residents. The city’s distinct cultural makeup has seen the establishment of numerous neighborhoods that were founded along cultural lines. Boston saw a large influx of Irish immigrants during the 1850s as Ireland suffered from the Great Famine. Mary Otis Sampson and William Murdock partnered to produce numerous distinct maps, city directories, and other photos, books, and pieces of art.
Boston remains one of the most quintessential American cities and bears a rich history that is unparalleled. This map bears a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is an essential piece of American cartographical history.
