This distinctive birds-eye perspective of the Mile High City shows the iconic American city in a period of significant growth and transformation economically and culturally. The first settlers arrived during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush and established a small settlement on the banks of the South Platte River. This would eventually grow into the city of Denver as American settlers traveling west helped spur local growth during their long overland journeys. In 1863 Western Union cemented Denver’s importance in the region by establishing it as their western terminus. Colorado was admitted to the Union in 1876 and by the time of this maps publication in the early twentieth century.
The distinctive aesthetic of this birds-eye perspective immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. One of the most distinguishing features of this panoramic depiction is the attention to detail and bold colorization. The city experienced significant prosperity during the late nineteenth century due to the extensive mining operations in the surrounding areas. By the 1890s, the city was the second-largest west of Omaha and had developed a unique culture and reputation as a frontier town framed under the vast Rocky Mountains.
Birdseye perspectives were widely popular during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike. They featured prominent civic buildings, and as is the case in this depiction, detailed them on the margins in greater detail to illustrate architectural advancements.
