Additional Information

Created from a photograph by Benjamin A. Gifford in 1908, this panoramic postcard reveals the Columbia River near Bonneville, Oregon, where towering basalt cliffs frame the only sea-level passage through the entire Cascade Mountain Range. The gorge stretches nearly ninety miles along the border between Oregon and Washington.

Gifford was among Oregon's most acclaimed landscape photographers, producing what historians call the most comprehensive visual record of the Columbia Gorge from the early twentieth century. Based in The Dalles from the late 1890s, he supplied railroads with sweeping images to advertise the region's grandeur and attract settlers and tourists westward.

By 1908, railroad lines traversed both shores of the river through the ancient canyon, where steamboats had navigated treacherous rapids since the 1850s. The Lewis and Clark Expedition first charted this dramatic corridor in 1805, and Oregon Trail pioneers later floated their wagons through its swift, dangerous waters.

This reproduction preserves a remarkable postcard from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, capturing the gorge decades before Bonneville Dam transformed the landscape in 1937. Treasured by collectors of Pacific Northwest scenery and early twentieth-century Americana, it immortalizes one of North America's most spectacular natural wonders.
