Additional Information

Photographed circa 1908 by Edward S. Curtis, this breathtaking image titled The Eagle Catcher depicts a Hidatsa man standing atop a large rock overlooking a sweeping valley, shown in full-length left profile while holding a captured eagle. The dramatic composition silhouettes the solitary figure against an expansive landscape.

The Hidatsa are a Siouan-speaking people who traditionally inhabited villages along the Missouri River in present-day North Dakota. Eagle trapping held deep spiritual significance within Hidatsa culture, as eagle feathers were essential to ceremonial regalia, religious rituals, and expressions of honor among Plains peoples.

Curtis published this photograph in the fourth volume of The North American Indian, his monumental twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. Widely regarded as one of his most compelling compositions, the image has been featured in numerous anthologies celebrating the finest achievements in American documentary photography.

This extraordinary photograph stands as a testament to the profound bond between the Hidatsa and the natural world, offering a window into ancestral traditions sustained for generations along the Missouri. It appeals to collectors of early twentieth-century photography, Northern Plains Indigenous heritage, and the unparalleled visual legacy of Edward Curtis.
