Additional Information
Held annually in Northeastern Oregon, the Pendleton Round-Up is one of the largest and most historic rodeos in the United States. Since its founding in 1910, this iconic event has attracted more than fifty thousand visitors each year and holds a prominent place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. In recognition of its impact, the Pendleton Round-Up was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2008 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
This panoramic photograph captures a timeless moment from the rodeo's second year: a line of proud female cowgirls atop their horses, an enduring tribute to the contributions of American cowgirls. Their legacy is woven into the heritage and traditions that helped shape the American West, where rodeo culture evolved from ranch work into the sport and performance we celebrate today.
The Pendleton Round-Up features eleven distinct events, drawing competitors from across the United States and Canada. The rodeo culminates in the All-Around Cowboy Prize, awarded to the individual excelling in the most events. One of the most beloved traditions, the Dress-Up Parade, takes place on Saturday of the week-long celebration, showcasing local floats from schools and businesses in a spirited competition for first place.
This photograph, with its classic aesthetic, transports viewers back in time, creating a powerful link between past and present. It offers a unique glimpse into the robust legacy of cowboy and cowgirl culture, an American tradition that continues to embody the history of the West.
