Additional Information

Photographed here in 1911, the same year he published the Plan de Ayala, which supported farmer's rights via land ownership reforms, Emiliano Zapata remains one of the most iconic and enduring leaders of the Mexican Revolution. Zapata was born in the rural town of Anenecuilco, Morelos, where farmers had experienced hardship forced upon them by land barons who monopolized the water for sugar cane production under the support of dictator Porfirio Diaz. Zapata's revolutionary demands called for the redistribution of land to the peasants and farmers who worked them. Zapata formed the Liberation Army of the South and planned to overthrow the federal government with the support of agrarian leaders throughout Mexico's countryside.

The elections in 1910 were a catalyst for the Mexican Revolution, as citizens across the nation were outraged by the flawed process, which deeply favored the establishment and wealthy landowners who controlled agricultural practices and kept the farmers in poverty. Francisco Madera was challenging the Presidency of Porfirio Diaz, and Zapata joined forces with Madera in an attempt to oust Diaz from power. Diaz served seven terms as President for a total of thirty-one years.

This photograph remains one of the most recognized images of Zapata. It bears a distinctive style and aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between Mexico's political past and present. Zapata's legacy cannot be underestimated, and his influence on the political movements in Mexico during the twentieth century continued to inform the nation's leftist movements.
