Additional Information

Captured in 1911, this remarkable portrait presents Harriet Tubman seated in Auburn, New York, near the end of her illustrious life. Born into slavery around 1822, Tubman escaped bondage and became one of the most celebrated conductors of the Underground Railroad, courageously leading dozens to freedom before the Civil War transformed the nation.

During the 1850s, Tubman made approximately thirteen missions into slave states, earning the nickname "Moses" for her unwavering dedication to liberation. Her strategic intelligence and profound courage extended beyond the Underground Railroad, as she served the Union Army as a scout, spy, and nurse throughout the Civil War years.

Following the war, Tubman settled in Auburn, where she advocated for women's suffrage and established a home for elderly African Americans. Her later years were marked by financial struggles despite her monumental contributions, though she remained a powerful symbol of resistance and determination until her death in 1913.

This photograph stands as a testament to Tubman's enduring legacy, offering a window into the life of an American icon who risked everything for freedom. A significant addition to any collection celebrating civil rights history, it remains a unique piece of American abolitionist heritage.
