Published during a period of significant transformation both politically and culturally, this depiction of Colombia bears a distinct aesthetic and classic style. Following the separation of the Department of Panama in 1903, Colombia was experiencing a period of relative stability following years of civil war from 1899 to 1902. Colombia gained independence in 1810 and is the first constitutional government in South America. Independence movements in Colombia were spurred by Simon Bolivar, an iconic figure of freedom from Spanish colonial rule through Latin and South America. Bolivar would ultimately lead Colombia, Haiti, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Bolivia to sovereignty.
Colombia’s geographic location shaped its culture, and it is one of the most diverse nations in South America. Its distinct blend of Spanish, Indigenous and other European influences have created a rich heritage. Additionally, it is the second most bio-diverse nation in the world and coastlines on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. By 1911 Colombia had become an essential link between North and South America. Numerous goods flowed by land and sea and attracted immigrants from across the Middle East and Africa. During this period, Colombia and Peru would go to war over disputed territories in the Amazon Basin, a conflict that would last until 1934.
Colombia remains an iconic and influential nation and bears a rich history. The signature illustration style of this map is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time. This is a significant piece of international cartographical history that links the past and present.
