Additional Information

Produced and published by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century, Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, this stunning birds eye perspective shows High Point, North Carolina, in a period of significant growth and transformation. Panoramic maps were widely popular from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1920s, when advances in aviation and photography made the process obsolete. The distinctive aesthetic and unique style make this map immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Birds eye perspectives served as marketing materials and featured prominent civic buildings, educational and religious institutions, and economic opportunities to attract residents and merchants alike.

High Point’s location between Charlotte and Goldsboro made it a central hub for raw goods and transportation of imported goods throughout the region. High Point was not officially incorporated until 1859 and became an important manufacturing center for the area well known for producing fine furniture spurred by the establishment of the High Point Furniture Factory in 1889. By 1913 the region had experienced considerable growth and had become the ninth-largest municipality in North Carolina. The semi-annual furniture market has attracted hundreds of thousands of tourists and was first held in 1921.

This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history illustrated by one of the masters of the form. As the nation transitioned from the Gilded Age to the early twentieth century, America experienced a period of great prosperity, growth, and development.
