Additional Information
Captured on March 3, 1913, this iconic photograph shows lawyer and activist Inez Milholland astride a white horse wearing a flowing white cape as she prepares to lead more than eight thousand marchers down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The parade was held the day before Woodrow Wilson's presidential inauguration.
Organized by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, the procession featured nine bands, four mounted brigades, and thousands of women marching by profession along the capital's grandest boulevard. Milholland, a Vassar graduate and New York University-trained attorney, rode at the head as the first of four mounted heralds.
The spectacle drew massive crowds, but onlookers surged into the street, jeering and shoving the marchers while police largely stood aside. The resulting outcry generated nationwide sympathy for the cause and reinvigorated a movement that had stalled at the federal level for more than six decades.
This celebrated photograph stands as a testament to the courage of women who fought for the right to vote, offering a window into one of the defining moments of the American suffrage movement. It appeals to collectors of women's history, early twentieth-century photography, and the enduring struggle for equal rights.
