Illustrated only four years before the outbreak of the Spanish Influenza in 1918, this advertisement by Gordon Grant remains a thoughtful and enduring tribute to those called upon to become nurses and help maintain public health and safety as advances in medicine and healthcare were transforming care during the early portions of the twentieth century. Produced for the American Red Cross by Grant, who had become well known for his watercolors and other illustrations for the Boy Scouts of America, this image's distinctive aesthetic and classic style immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
Grant also produced work for Jack London, and his style inspired many American artists throughout the twentieth century. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881, inspired by the Red Cross in Switzerland, and was created to help with emergency relief, disaster response, and disaster preparedness. The organization was founded by Clara Barton who had traveled to Europe to provide care during the Franco-Prussian War. Barton also served as a field nurse during the American Civil War and advocated for those in need throughout her life and career, which lasted until she resigned from the Red Cross in 1904.
As the organization grew and expanded, it continued to provide charitable efforts to people across the United States who were impacted by unforeseen natural disasters and remains a vital resource for those in need to this day. This is an authentic piece of American health care and art history.
