Additional Information
Located in Ithaca, New York, Cornell University was founded in 1865, the same year the American Civil War ended, as the nation entered a period of reconstruction and the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. This era, later known as the Gilded Age, would come to define the cultural, political, and societal direction of the United States in the latter part of the nineteenth century. As an Ivy League institution, Cornell has produced a distinguished roster of alumni who have shaped a wide range of fields since its founding.
This 1915 photograph of the Cornell Library reflects the university's deep commitment to academic excellence and intellectual exploration. Home to more than eight million volumes spanning countless disciplines, the library also houses a remarkable collection of rare and historic items. Among its treasures are one of only five surviving manuscripts of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, ancient cuneiform tablets, medieval texts, and first editions of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species. Cornell was also a pioneer in digitization efforts, making much of its collection accessible online to expand public access and preservation.
The image bears a classic aesthetic and timeless style that captures the essence of the era. It serves as a window into Cornell's enduring legacy and offers a visual connection between past and present, providing an authentic glimpse into one of America's most respected centers of higher learning.
