Additional Information

Produced and published by the Automobile Club of Southern California, this unique depiction of Los Angeles and the surrounding region shows the region in a period of significant transformation in the early twentieth century. The club was founded in 1900 and advocated for expanding roads, establishing traffic laws, and was dedicated to improving overall driving conditions. The club was an early advocate for the construction of the Ridge Route through the San Gabriel Mountains to connect Los Angeles to the Central Valley and the agricultural hub of the state in Bakersfield. The club also commissioned their own teams of cartographers to create depictions such as this.

By 1915 Los Angeles had incorporated Hollywood to the West and was home to more than eighty percent of the world’s burgeoning film industry. The economic benefits and prosperity would insulate much of the local economy through the Great Depression and beyond. 1915 also saw the transformation of zoning for industrial and residential development, which resulted in the creation of numerous suburbs following the conclusion of World War II. During the early twentieth century, the city also saw the establishment of many manufacturing plants that helped create a thriving aerospace industry.

The completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 cemented the metropolitan area and compelled the surrounding towns to seek annexation. This unique depiction bears a remarkable style and is immediately recognizable, transporting the viewer back in time and creating an indelible bond between the past and present in this work of cartographical history.
