Additional Information

Few peaks in the American West inspired more reverence than Mount of the Holy Cross in Colorado's Sawatch Range, where melting snow traces a natural cross into the mountain's face. This 1898 color print captures Thomas Moran's painting of the peak, based on William Henry Jackson's legendary 1873 survey photograph.

Jackson first documented the mountain during Ferdinand Hayden's 1873 Rocky Mountain survey. The photograph so moved the nation that poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow composed a tribute, and Thomas Moran painted a monumental canvas of the peak in 1875, cementing its place within the American spiritual imagination.

Mount of the Holy Cross drew thousands of religious pilgrims by the 1880s, its snow-filled ravines forming a visible cross at nearly fourteen thousand feet. The Detroit Photographic Company's color reproduction process carried Moran's portrayal to a nationwide audience, bringing the peak's reverential imagery into households across America.

This print stands as a testament to the convergence of faith, art, and Western exploration that captivated American culture in the late nineteenth century. Offering a window into when a single mountain commanded the devotion of a nation, it is an extraordinary addition to any collection of American heritage.
