Additional Information

By the early portion of the twentieth century, Meriden, Connecticut, had become one of the most prosperous towns in New England. Its local economy was spurred on by a robust manufacturing industry that was known for producing some of the finest lamps, glass, metalware, and silver goods. Numerous design and technology patents were granted to industrialists and inventors in the city, and this growth continued for the following decades. Located halfway between New Haven and Hartford, Meriden remains a classic example of New England charm and bears distinctive historical architecture. It was first established in 1806 and officially incorporated as a city in 1867. The oldest house in the town, the Solomon Goffe House, dates to 1711 and remains standing to this day after becoming a museum in 1986.

Produced and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, this stunning birds eye perspective immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This style of map was widely popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and served as marketing materials to promote economic opportunities and attract residents and merchants alike. Fowler’s career spanned more than five decades following his first publication in 1871.

Fowler’s signature style and distinctive aesthetic capture Meriden in a period of continued prosperity and growth. The city has maintained much of its classic architecture and links to its rich history. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that illustrates the cities unique culture and traditional New England heritage.
