Additional Information
Published around 1919 by Shobido and Company of Tokyo, this vivid battle scene depicts the Imperial Japanese Army attacking from sky, water, and shore during the Siberian Intervention near Vladivostok. Biplanes sweep overhead while warships bombard coastal positions and infantry advance along the shoreline in a coordinated assault.
The image forms number seventeen in "The Illustration of the Siberian War," a series produced with captions in both English and Japanese for domestic and international audiences. Such visual chronicles followed a long tradition of documenting campaigns through dramatic narrative art dating back to the conflict with China in 1894.
Japan deployed over seventy thousand troops to the region between 1918 and 1922, ostensibly supporting Allied efforts against Bolshevik forces after the Russian Revolution. The operation aimed to protect interests in Manchuria and the Far East, though Western partners grew uneasy as Tokyo stayed long after other nations withdrew.
This reproduction provides insight into a largely forgotten chapter when global powers competed for influence across the frozen reaches of eastern Siberia. Considered among the most compelling examples of early twentieth-century wartime art, it brings historic significance to any office, study, or library.
