Additional Information

Photographed circa 1923 by Edward S. Curtis, this commanding portrait titled A Klamath Head-Dress presents a Klamath man in a bust-length study facing directly forward and wearing an elaborate feathered headdress. The striking regalia reflects the cultural exchange that brought Plains traditions westward into the Klamath Basin.

The Klamath have inhabited southern Oregon's lake-filled valleys and timbered highlands for more than thirteen thousand years. During the nineteenth century, contact with neighboring peoples along the Columbia River and central Oregon plains introduced elements of Plains dress, including feathered headdresses and fringed deerskin garments, into Klamath ceremonial life.

Curtis devoted the thirteenth volume of The North American Indian to the peoples of northern California and southern Oregon, publishing this image alongside studies of the Hupa, Yurok, Karok, and Klamath. His twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930 preserved vanishing traditions across eighty tribal nations.

This striking portrait stands as a testament to the rich ceremonial traditions of the Klamath people, offering a window into the dynamic cultural exchanges that shaped Indigenous life across the Pacific Northwest. It appeals to collectors of Native American regalia, early twentieth-century photography, and the remarkable achievements of Edward Curtis.

This captivating twilight composition stands as a testament to Seattle's storied transformation from a frontier lumber town into a thriving modern metropolis. An extraordinary addition to any collection, it offers a resplendent window into the Pacific Northwest's urban character and enduring architectural identity.
