Additional Information

In the mid-nineteenth century, American settlers moved west as part of a significant migration spurred by the expansion of settlements across Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. The iconic Grand Canyon became one of the most notable geologic features encountered on this journey. It would go on to be recognized as one of the most iconic natural features in the United States. This map was published seven years after the Grand Canyon was officially declared a National Park, following efforts for preservation started by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903. Indigenous peoples inhabited the Canyon for thousands of years before Spanish explorers discovered it in 1540.

The Colorado River has carved out the Canyon over nearly two billion years. It has fascinated tourists and geologists alike with its unique features and a climate that varies drastically from the peak to the basin. During the nineteenth century, several attempts to establish mines in the area proved unsuccessful due to the rugged terrain and steep cliffs that characterize the Grand Canyon. With a depth of more than one mile and a length of nearly two hundred and eighty miles, the site attracts almost five million tourists annually.

This map illustrates the vastness of the remote region of Northern Arizona that is home to the Grand Canyon. Numerous archaeological sites are found in caves and other features indicating inhabitants in the area for thousands of years prior to European contact. This map bears a classic style and immediately transports the viewer back in time.
